The Munich massacre was an attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, by 8 members of the Palestinian terrorist team Black September, who took nine members of the Israeli Olympic group hostage, after killing two even more. Black September called the operation Iqrit and Biram , after 2 Palestinian Christian towns whose citizens were eliminated by the Israel Protection Forces (IDF) during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The Black September commander was Luttif Afif, who was likewise the mediator. West German neo-Nazis gave the team logistical assistance.Shortly after the captives were taken, Afif demanded the release of 234 Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons as well as the West German-held owners of the Red Army Faction, Andreas Baader and also Ulrike Meinhof.
